A well-written strategic business plan is essential to starting and running a business. Business plans are required when applying for business loans, grants or seeking investors. Each plan will vary depending on industries, for profits, and non profits. What goes into the business plan? The most effective strategic business plans follow the following eight steps.
1. Executive summary
2. Company background, organizational mission, vision, and value statements
3. Environmental Analysis: Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats, Trends
4. Implementation plan: Include objectives, functional tactics, action items, milestones, tasks, resource allocation, and a deadline.
5. Analysis of key success factors for plan implementation, including a cash budget and forecasted financials, including a break-even chart
6. Risk management plan, including contingency plans for identified risks
7. Change management strategies that would enhance successful implementation
8. Communicate the business plan effectively to stakeholders
There is no single formula for developing a strategic business plan, but some elements are consistent throughout all business plans.
All plans should include an executive summary, a description of the business, a plan for how you will market and manage your business, financial projections and the appropriate supporting documents.
The more structured the strategic business plans are increases your opportunity to communicate and sell your value proposition to all stakeholders involved.
