There are countless discussions and publications how one should seek mentors to improve or enhance their life or career, how to nurture mentor relationships, and whether these relationships should be formal arrangements or informal connections such as an on-call arrangement. There is a different classification of mentors who I called ‘flash mentors’. They appear in your life so briefly, perhaps a matter of seconds or an ‘interminable’ couple of minutes, imparting invaluable wisdom, courage, reassurance, and thought provoking ideas. Then they vanish. Forever.
If you ask anyone around you whether they saw this person they’ll say, “No” or even if they did they would provide only a general description. More interestingly still is even if the flash mentor informs you that he lives or works in the area, never providing a specific address, you never recall seeing him earlier or after your encounter. And they never leave contact information even when you ask them. Nor can you find them on Google. All you get is a bright departing smile.
During your brief encounter, they instinctively know more about you than even a friend or family member could know with respect to your issues. Often they tell you a brief story about themselves which, in reality, is about you. In that way you feel as if they’re not telling you what to think or do which might frighten you. And like a dream you don’t realize this special spiritual encounter until after the fact.
What do they look like? Think of the time you met a kid whose vocabulary, insight and wisdom were far beyond their life experiences and whose tale pertains specifically to you. Or the elderly man whose mind and speech patterns are as sharp as any young Turk.
For the more religiously inclined you may consider them angels on your shoulder, an aspect of channeling. For those less religiously inclined, you may consider them images created in the flesh by your subconscious seeking answers to difficult questions. In either case, as the saying goes, “When the student is ready the teacher will come.” There are many teachers out there in different forms.
Importantly for your protection, you must identify the difference between this flash mentor of light and a dark element. In my experiences, dark elements have physically asymmetrical features like a sock that you put on awkwardly. The sock is on your foot yet you feel uncomfortable. When dark elements speak, you feel uneasy even though what they tell you makes sense or what you want to hear. Let’s face it. There’s ying-yang competition in all realms. We all seek answers to our problems and this is one of the multitude of ways that our subconscious or the spiritual world provides through these messengers.
